Kung Fu
Shaolin Kung Fu for fitness - External
The Shaolin Kung Fu Class will help you to get in shape, lose weight, increase personal confidence and learn how to defend yourself.
The Shaolin Kung Fu class gives a fantastic workout which is more vigorous than an aerobics workout. It tones and strengthens the body, while increasing flexibility and fitness. In the Kung Fu class you will do strength training techniques using your own body, cardiovascular training, conditioning for flexibility, and speed training designed to give your muscles explosive power, and to narrow your reaction time.
If you haven’t been physically active in the past then start slowly and build up. There are different levels of classes depending on the needs and abilities of the students.
Bored with the gym, you may want to stay in Kung Fu level 1 (preparation) for keep fit and basic self defence, or you may take an exam, and progress to other levels where you can learn more complex Shaolin forms, seventy two different styles, participate in pad work, bag work, sparring, have the opportunity to test yourself in the ring, and compete in sanshou competitions around the world.
All of the levels will challenge you. It is only through hard training that you come to understand you have much greater abilities than you thought you had.
The classes are open to all. Anyone can participate in Shaolin Kung Fu, and anyone can succeed if you commit to the training, and always try to be better than you were yesterday.
To succeed in martial arts is to succeed in life.
Shaolin training emphasizes the importance of internal as well as external. Only when your mind and body are unified can you have mental and physical health.
When you take up the practice of Shaolin Kung Fu, you are taking part in a tradition which is thousands of years old. Shaolin Kung Fu is more than just a method of self-defence; it is an ancient system that promotes spiritual, mental, and physical health.
Mastering a martial art takes time, discipline, perseverance, and hard work. Only by training hard and often can you achieve the greatest benefits from martial arts, this means:
- Training at least three times a week.
- Attending training sessions faithfully and consistently as you would any other appointment. Research shows that it takes about six weeks for any new programme to become a habit. So if you can stick with your training programme for just six weeks, you will make it a habit.
- Practicing as perfectly as you can. If it takes two thousand repetitions for your body to ‘remember’ how to do a movement, and one thousand five hundred are sloppy, what will your body remember?
To help you with your training, Shifu Yan Lei has compiled an Preparation Kung Fu Training Plan.
